You are the single most important change agent for your students & schools!
These may be the new buzz words, but they were always themes that our grandmothers and mothers taught us: Never give up! These are not new ideas but sometimes, we do need to be reminded of them.
The newness of the school year has worn off, and you are fast approaching the end of the first quarter. All those lofty goals you had in August--did you meet them? Don’t give up on them. Sure, you may be a little behind in where you wanted to be in your curriculum, behind in your grading, behind in replacing the bulletin boards to reflect the new season, but try not to get overwhelmed and give up! You, the educator, are the single most important change agent for your students and your schools!
Recently, I read a post on Facebook in which all the teachers at a school created a project to tell individual students how special they are! They brought the students into the hall (students just knew they had done something wrong), then the teacher gave than approximately 30 seconds of individual praise. These teachers filmed the students' responses and even though they lasted no more than 30 seconds, the amount of good it did for many of these students will last a lifetime!
Finding one good thing about a student is really much easier than giving up on a student. You may never know how much a small gesture of faith in a student will boost his or her confidence. I truly believe every one of us seeks approval, validity and credibility from a role model, no matter if that role model is a parent, teacher, boss or peer. By never giving up on those challenging students, you have truly nourished a potentially good citizen to be an even better one.
