In addition to our regularly scheduled professional development, our team has been actively visiting schools across the state to provide trainings by request. This is especially beneficial for schools for a couple of reasons: 1) it gives them the chance to have trainings designed specifically for them that address their immediate needs, and 2) it provides the convenience of having the event on site. This means no worries about travel time to a separate location, and then getting everyone settled in for the session. Believe it or not, these things can add quite a bit of time to the overall event!
We truly enjoy these sessions, as it gives us time to work closely with your school staff and understand better exactly what your district's needs are.
To give you a better idea of the kinds of work we're doing, just last week, we were in Locust Grove and Thomas-Fay-Custer, working with teachers, students and parents.
Locust Grove--Ben Parker (IT)
Ben spent 3 days with the Locust Grove Schools community. During this time, he met with parents and gave them valuable information on the best apps to use at home with their children and frank talk on how their kids are really using social media. He also spoke with middle and high school students on proper social media use: etiquette, safety, bullying awareness, etc. Ben also covered the importance of carefully considering the impact of what you post and how that can impact you years down the road when applying for jobs. This is an incredibly important and relevant topic for students today, and we hope to have many other talks like this with additional schools. These 2 regional developers met with 35 teachers from various grade levels. Their collaborative time was spent covering a number of teaching strategies:
Those teachers who attended were given a license to Edivate (formerly PD360), which provides all kinds of instructional videos for teachers to view on their own time to further enhance and improve their teaching methods.
The goal with our events is to always provide relevant content that you can immediately begin using. There's nothing more frustrating than attending professional development that ends up being a waste of your time, right? Being neighborly costs nothing, but its value is beyond calculation. As I headed to the land of “Snowmegaddon” this past week to help my daughter with our 9-month old granddaughter, I witnessed many acts of random kindness as neighbors shoveled sidewalks and strangers gave up their airplane seats so parents & children could sit together.
That is what the OPSRC team and specifically the Teaching & Learning team are planning for your staff/school & district as we head into the Spring. OPSRC is excited to be planning five regional events throughout the 2016-2017 year dubbed REFRESH: An Interactive Professional Development Forum.
