Did you know computing jobs are the #1 source of new wages in the United States? Did you also know there are 500,000 current computing openings in every industry and every state, and they’re projected to grow at twice the rate of all other jobs? Around 90% of parents want their child to study computer science, but only 35% of high schools nationwide teach computer science. Houston: we have a problem! But guess what? OPSRC has the answer! Being Oklahoma’s Code.org partner means we can provide intensive supports as you build pathways to computer science at your school or entire district.
If it’s professional development you need, we’re excited to announce that applications for Code.org’s Professional Learning Program for Computer Science Principles (high school) and Computer Science Discoveries (middle school) are now open. Code.org’s Professional Learning Program is an intensive, year-long professional learning program for middle and high school educators who are interested in teaching Code.org’s CS Discoveries or CS Principles courses. These programs are designed to prepare educators to provide high-quality instruction based on the curriculum, tools and approach to students in their classrooms. Best of all, you don’t need any prior computer science experience to get started! If your school plans to offer these courses in 2019-20, please encourage interested teachers to apply today. If you’re not sure if this is something you’d like to undertake, I encourage you to chat with our Innovative Programs Manager, McKalyn Danner. She can help you strategically plan your implementation of computer science.

Note: CS Discoveries can be taught as a single semester or a full year. CS Principles must be taught as a full year.
The fee for participating in this program is $800 per teacher (which is more than a 70% discount off the national cost) but all qualified OPSRC members will receive scholarships!

Funding for public schools in Oklahoma is a hot topic and for good reason. The State Department of Education (SDE) has issued a record number of emergency teacher certifications this year, and it seems each day brings a new story of teachers leaving Oklahoma for better pay in neighboring states.
This is one of the most important months of the year for school finances.
