The Happiest of Birthdays to You, Mrs. Cleary!
The numbers don’t lie: 100 and 85 million! 100 is the age of author extraordinaire Beverly Cleary, whose birthday is today, and 85 million is how many copies of her books have sold.

The numbers don’t lie: 100 and 85 million! 100 is the age of author extraordinaire Beverly Cleary, whose birthday is today, and 85 million is how many copies of her books have sold. These books brought us such characters as Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins and many of the other wonderful characters who enriched our lives and our children’s lives over the years.
Wouldn’t it be nice to relive those simple days when either we were reading Cleary’s novels or we were reading them to our children? With all of the hustle and bustle, maybe it would be good, on this special birthday, to stop and reflect how Ramona Quimby would react to the challenges in our lives and summarize them with the simplicity and honesty of an 8-year-old.
Ms. Cleary stated in a recent article that she wrote her books for the pure pleasure of reading, and that’s why we all liked them--there were no hidden agendas or symbolism to analyze.
Go ahead and “make a great big noisy fuss” as Ramona would say, do your own DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time and don’t forget to wish Cleary the happiest of all birthdays.
Happy Birthday Ms. Cleary!
I recently participated in a webinar for school attorneys on the topic of how we can better serve and protect our immigrant student population in light of policy changes under the current presidential administration.
It’s official: summer is here! Hopefully, you are looking forward to some well-deserved downtime with your family and with colleagues. Not being a warm weather fan, I am already looking forward to the fall with its college football and Indian tacos at the Oklahoma State Fair.
