A Tribute to Harper Lee

This is an extra to my weekly blogs because I could not let this “teachable moment” slide. I have read all of the articles I could find this past weekend after hearing of the passing of my favorite author, Harper Lee.

This is an extra to my weekly blogs because I could not let this “teachable moment” slide.  I have read all of the articles I could find this past weekend after hearing of the passing of my favorite author,  Harper Lee.

I have taught her book, To Kill a Mockingbird  for many years in 9th grade English, and my first words were always “Ms. Lee stated in an earlier interview that 'every author has one good book to write and I have written mine.'” She gave us no additional literary masterpieces until 2015, when Go Set a Watchman was discovered and then published.  No matter where you stand with that book, I have to say a big THANK YOU to Harper Lee, who gave the world To Kill a Mockingbird.

This book was a delight to read, teach and discuss, and for many students, it unlocked the door that made them want to read more. I mourn the loss of this author, but her legacy will always continue as good teachers, like you, offer To Kill a Mockingbird as a selection for your students to read, analyze and cherish as I have done and will continue to do.

Continue the legacy and have a good week!
